UK CAA Class 3 medicals

If you are an ATCO you will need to hold a valid Class 3 medical certificate. Scotland Aeromedical can undertake a renewal or revalidation UK CAA Class 3 medical examinations for you.

What tests will be performed at my Class 3 medical?

 

At the Class 3 Medical, one of our AMEs will review your medical history and will perform a medical examination to check that everything is functioning correctly. The examination will cover areas such as vision, hearing, lungs, heart, blood pressure, stomach, limbs and nervous system. You will need to provide a urine sample for testing and if you have just turned 40, then a cholesterol blood test will take place and you will need to have an extended eye examination performed by an optometrist. Additionally, an ECG (heart trace) or audiogram (hearing check) may be required depending on your age and medical history.

What is the difference between a revalidation and renewal Class 3 medical?

 

A revalidation Class 3 ATCO medical is performed when you attend for your medical within 45 days of the expiry date of your current pilot medical certificate. The benefits of this are that the validity period of your Class 3 medical will be calculated from its original expiry date.

If you don’t revalidate your certificate within the 45 days leading up to its expiry date, you will need to have it renewed. Scotland Aeromedical can renew your Class 3  medical. However, please note that if your certificate expired more than 2 years before your application to renew it, Scotland Aeromedical will need to assess your aeromedical records before carrying out the renewal examination. If your certificate expired more than 5 years before your application to renew it then you will have to follow the same process as for initial issue and this will involve attending an aeromedical centre.

 

 

Can Scotland Aeromedical perform initial Class 3 ATCO medical examinations?

No. You will need to have your initial  Class 3 ATCO medical examination performed at a CAA approved Aeromedical centre. Please click this link for a list of UK approved Aeromedical Centres (AeMC).

What do I need to bring to the medical appointment?

 

You will need to bring the following documents with you to your medical appointment:

 

1. Signed client consent form – this will be emailed to you with your appointment confirmation.

2. Photo identification (e.g. passport or driving licence).

3. Completed but unsigned  application forms- these will be emailed to you with the appointment confirmation in the case of an EASA medical. However, for UK CAA medicals the medical questionnaire  needs to be filled out on the CAA portal so please ensure you have a CAA portal account with access to 'medical services' and please ensure that you have paid the fee for the medical questionnaire to the CAA before your appointment with us. 4. Last medical certificate, even if expired.

5. Most recent spectacles /contact lenses prescription and spectacles if these are worn.

6. A comprehensive eye examination form filled by your optician may be required every 4 years, if you wear spectacles or contact lenses. This will be emailed to you with the appointment confirmation. As a guide, if your lenses correction is +3.00 to +5.00, or -3.00 to -6.00, this should be every 4 years; with corrections greater than +5.00 or -6.00, this should be every 2 years.
